RESEARCH Teams
Comparative Politics
DEMOS (Democracy in Europe and the Mobilisation of the Society)
The project focuses on forms of deliberative democracy as they are elaborated "from below" and implemented both in the internal organisation of social movements and in experiments of participatory decision-making.In particular the project analyses the issue of active democracy as it emerges in the theorisation and practices of the movements that have recently mobilised on the issues of globalization.
EUDO (European Union Democracy Observatory)
EUDO was launched in the Spring of 2006 as an independent and interdisciplinary academic organisation with the declared goal to produce a permanent and periodic assessment of democratic practices within the EU, as a forum to exchange ideas and best practices, and as a resource for policy makers, academics and the citizens throughout Europe.
PIREDEU (Research on Electoral Democracy in the EU)
It is the objective of this sub-observatory to systematically identify and describe democratic institutional reforms below the Treaty level. If the Treaty revision which is currently prepared within the IGC eventually enters into force, there will be no further Treaty amendments inb the foreseeable future. That will make it all the more important to observe the reforms and changes of decision-making rules that have in part been explicitly designed at the sub-treaty level, but also on changes of democratic institutional rules that have emerged over time in the course of time
SIEPOL (Seclusion and Inclusion in the European Polity. Institutional Change and Democratic Practices)
By seclusion and inclusion this research refers to the following: at both the European and national levels, we appear to be witnessing two contrasting developments. On the one hand, political decision-makers appear increasingly “sealed off” or “secluded” from the wider constituency, and, indeed from the rank-and-file of elected politicians; on the other hand, there are multiple and diffuse attempts at a radical opening-up of democratic decision-making that invoke greater inclusion through direct-democratic procedures, greater decision-making transparency & more widespread access to information
Sub observatory on Citizenship
The sub-observatory on citizenship will focus on Union citizenship and European regulations of the status of long-term residents and of anti-discrimination policies.
Sub observatory on Institutional Change and Reforms
It is the objective of this sub-observatory to systematically identify and describe democratic institutional reforms below the Treaty level. If the Treaty revision which is currently prepared within the IGC eventually enters into force, there will be no further Treaty amendments inb the foreseeable future. Sub observatory on Political Parties and Representation
The Sub-observatory on Public Opinion, Political Elites and the Media focuses on the analysis of the attitudes and preferences of publics, the media and the elites, and to measure the extent to which the latter converge or diverge, in which field and in which direction. It is managed by Mark Franklin and Alexander H. Trechsel.

VETOs (Violent Extremist Terrorist Organizations )
This project explores how societal and organizational conditions and political ideologies influence the normative systems of activists and organizations that use violence, and what aspects of these normative systems are most conducive for terrorist activities.
Domestic Policy
Research Group on Aging and the Life Course (FALL)
The Research Group on Aging and the Life Course has since 1985 conducted a large number of research studies (also internationally comparative) on institutional and biographical processes of aging and the transition to retirement as well as on the social and political effects of demographic change

special features
| Alumni Programmes for Doctoral Students: The programme of activities focuses on university teaching; presentation skills (as well as interview and public speaking skills) and various kinds of 'generic skills'' which are dealt with in short seminars (i.e., personal career planning, setting up a research proposal, personal websites, time management). |
| Research Facilities: Research at the Institute is supported by a first-class library and a team of experienced librarians and information specialists. Research at the Institute is supported by state-of-the-art IT facilities linked via high-speed local networks. Social scientists can use a range of software packages and access on-line data in the research labs. The Language Centre offers intensive and extensive courses in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. |
